Hunt Pitches Shutout as Trailblazers Split with Bears
The Trailblazers baseball team earned a split with the Bridgewater State Bears today in Bridgewater.
Todd Hunt scattered six hits and three walks as he threw a complete game 1-0 shutout of the Bears. Bridgewater had runners on in every inning but the fourth, but Hunt never allowed a runner to reach third base all day.
MCLA scored their only run of the day in the third off Bears starter David Holmes. They did the damage with two outs; Alon Willing singled, Mike Sullivan followed with a single and Willing went to third. Wiliing would score the only run of the game on a passed ball.
Hunt and the defense made it stand up. Bridgewater (11-17, 4-8) had two runners on in the sixth with one out and the defense turned a double play to end the inning. The Bears put two more on in the seventh with one down, but Hunt got pinch-hitter Kevin Sugermeyer on strikes and Jacob Souza popped up to end the game.
Game two was a different story as Bridgewater scored four times in the second off starter Liam Nolan. Nolan yielded seven hits in four innings and took the loss as MCLA fell 8-1.
MCLA also struggled off Bears starter Adam Mullen, mustering just four singles; Mullen did walk four as well. After playing a clean game defensively in game one, MCLA committed three errors in game two, allowing three unearned runs.
Tyler Benoit had three hits on the afternoon for MCLA. Sullivan had a couple of hits and stole two bases.
MCLA is now 10-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play. They are scheduled to play Salem State tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
