Volleyball Goes the Distance, Picks Up MASCAC Win at Salem State

SALEM, Mass.—The MCLA Volleyball Team took to the road this afternoon for a matinee matchup with MASCAC foe Salem State in a game with playoff implications for the Trailblazers. MCLA entered the game as one of three MASCAC teams with a pair of conference wins and all in the mix for the fourth seed in the conference playoffs and the home game that comes with it. Elizabeth Brown posted a season-high 28 kills and accounted for 31 points as the Trailblazers won in five sets.

  • Series History: Salem State leads the all-time series 20-17, including a 3-0 win last season by the Trailblazers in North Adams on October 21st. The teams first met on October 6, 1975.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MCLA took the first two sets 25-19 and 29-27, while Salem took the third and fourth sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21 to set up a decisive fifth set that would go to the Trailblazers 16-14.
  • Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Brown (Lee, MA) led the MCLA attack, finishing with 28 kills on 62 attacks, good for a .371 hitting percentage. Brown added a service ace and a pair of solo blocks to account for 31 Trailblazers' 63 points. On the defensive side, Brown also was second on MCLA with 19 digs.
  • Senior libero Ezmeralda Albright (Loves Park, IL) was the only player to top Brown's showing on the defensive side, recording a game-high 38 digs. Albright was also part of a trio of Trailblazers with a pair of service aces, joined by sophomore setter MaKayla Schuerer (Lee, MA) and first-year setter Addison Decaro (Eagle River, AK).
  • Junior setter Shannon O'Brien (Unionville, CT) contributed 21 assists to pace MCLA, while Decaro added 16 more for the visitors. A pair of Vikings, Celia Carbone and Eva Haralabatos, each picked up 19 assists for the hosts.
  • Presley Shairs led Salem's attack, finishing with a team-high 21 kills on 53 attacks and a .302 hitting percentage.

UP NEXT:

On Wednesday, MCLA will be back in action when it plays host to Bridgewater State in the Amsler Campus Center Gym for a MASCAC matchup with the Bears. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
