WESTFIELD, Mass.—The MCLA Men's Soccer Team took to the road this afternoon to meet up with their closest MASCAC neighbor, the Westfield State Owls. The Trailblazers entered the game looking to snap a two-game losing streak, while the Owls were looking to break out of a three-game winless streak. Despite WSU outshooting MCLA 21-13, the game finished in a scoreless tie.

  • Series History: Westfield State leads the all-time series 25-21-5, including a 3-2 win at MCLA on September 29, 2023. Westfield State also won the first time the teams met, by the score of 6-0, on October 30, 1967.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MCLA senior goalkeeper Ryan Taylor (Plattsburgh, NY) finished the game with eight saves, including one in the opening minutes of the second half when he was just able to dive to his left and punch a shot by Westfield's Sonny Mazza before following up with another save less than a minute later of a header by Charlie Anischik. The shutout was Taylor's third of the season and moved his record to 5-3-1. The eight saves increased Taylor's MASCAC leading save total to 55.
  • For the Owls, netminder Luke Theroux matched Taylor, nearly save for save, finishing with seven stops and recording his third shutout of the year with a record of 3-2-3.
  • Anischik led all players with a game-high five shots, including a game-high four on goal. Sophomore midfielder Traizen Griffith (Enfield, CT) paced the Trailblazers with four shots and was matched by sophomore forward Mateo Phillips (Pittsfield, MA) with two shots on goal.

UP NEXT:

On Tuesday, MCLA will be back in action when they travel to Keene State for a non-conference matchup with another set of Owls at Dr. Ron Butcher Field. The teams will take the pitch for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
