Women’s Hockey Fall in MASCAC Quarterfinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The MCLA Women's Ice Hockey team closed out their 2024-25 season this evening with a loss to Anna Maria College at the Buffone Arena. Carlen Bertrand had a goal and an assist for MCLA while Anna Maria's Olympia Myers scored twice to send the AMCATs into the semifinal round.
THE BASICS:
- Date: Wednesday, February 26, 2025
- Score: MCLA 3, Anna Maria College 3
- Records: #5 MCLA Trailblazers 9-16-1 (MASCAC 3-11-1) | #4 Anna Maria College AMCATs 10-14-2 (MASCAC 6-7-2)
HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Anna Maria broke through with the first ever MASCAC Women's Ice Hockey post season goal just under 14 minutes into the game. Olympia Myers (at 13:52, assisted by Alexandra Petersen) was credited with what would be the only goal for either team in the first period.
- The Trailblazers wasted little time evening the score in the second period, finding an equalizers 24 seconds into the frame. Sophomore defenseman Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON / Sudbury Wolves) started and finished the scoring sequence. First by firing a shot that went wide to the right side of the net, but rebounded directly to sophomore forward Nicolette Bardsley (Gilbertsville, PA / Chatham University) below the goal line. Bardsley cleared the puck back to Bertrand (0:24, Bardsley) in the slot, where she skated back to find a better angle and wristed a shot just under the cross bar and over the goalie's stick side shoulder. The goal was Bertrand's team leading 16th of the season, while the assist was the sixth for Bardsley.
- The AMCATs retook the lead just under four minutes later. Ceili Nolan (4:12, unassisted) was credited with the first goal. Just over two minutes later Anna Maria added an insurance goal when Myers (6:19, Nolan) scored her second of the game while on a power play.
- MCLA responded a bit under five minutes later to pull back to within one goal. The play started with the Trailblazers clearing the puck from their defensive end and sophomore forward Belle Wurmser (Brick, NJ / Princeton Tiger Lillies) out racing an Anna Maria defender to the puck to prevent an icing call. Wurmser sent the puck around the back of the goal and around the left side boards to first-year forward Kiera Grom (Livonia, MI / Belle Tire), who continued the puck on it's way to first-year defenseman Rozene Sabeti-Seidel (Turner Valley, AB / Rocky Mtn. Raiders) at the left point. Sabeti-Seidel passed the puck to Bertrand near the middle of the blue line for a one-timer off the goalie's stick side blocker. The puck rebounded right at the Grom's (11:15, Bertrand) feet for a quick flick into the net. The tally was the second for Grom, and the assists were the fourth and eighth, respectively for Sabeti-Seidel and Bertrand.
- Grom's put back would prove to be the final goal, but the third period was not without intrigue. The teams combined for 17 shots in the final frame that started with MCLA on a penalty kill. Both teams would kill of two penalties before the third period ended, and an empty net for the final 93 seconds provided the fans with some excitement.
- THE AMCATs' Megan Tegethoff stopped 21 of 23 shots to even her record at 5-5-2, while MCLA's junior goalie Juliette Barney fell to 3-10-0 after recording 36 saves.
