North Adams, MA- MCLA freshman forward Natalie Caney has been tabbed as the 2013 Masscachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Rookie of the Year as announced by the league offices on Wednesday.
Caney burst onto the scene for MCLA recording a hat trick in her first collegiate game against Minnesota-Morris. She would record three hat tricks on the season, one against SUNYIT and the other came against MASCAC foe Bridgewater State.
The Belchertown, MA native tied the single season mark for goals scored by a freshman tying Roberta Smith's 17 back in 1987. Caney becomes the first Trailblazer since Jessica Tietgens back in 2007 to claim the conference honor.
Caney also collected a pair of assists on the season giving her a whopping 36 points in her first season. The goals scored ranked her second in the conference, while she finished third in points. She claimed the weekly rookie of the week honor an astounding five times this season.
MCLA wrapped up their season yesterday falling to Bridgewater in the MASCAC quarterfinals.
