South Hadley, MA—The duo of Reagan Scattergood and Kelly Moczulski notched 14 kills apiece as they lead the MCLA Volleyball team to a hard fought 3-1 victory in the season opener tonight at Mount Holyoke. The Trailblazers are now 1-0 while the Lyons fall to 0-1.
Scattergood collected a career best 14 kills on 29 attacks. Moczulski was just as efficient collecting her 14 kills on just 25 attacks.
The Trailblazers rolled in the opening set 25-17. MCLA got off to a nice start on the heels of Scattergood and first year Trailblazer Chloie Garber. They jumped out to a commanding lead and never looked back.
The hosts would answer in the second set however to tie things up. MHC took the second set 25-20 to head to a pivotal third set.
MHC took advantage early in the third set to lead 16-10 before MCLA would rally. The Trailblazers would rattle off seven straight points to pull ahead 17-16. Natasha Stewart keyed the spurt with two aces and an assist. The teams would battle back and forth and eventually were knotted up at 25-25. Stewart added a kill and then Moczulski put the set away off a Scattergood feed to put MCLA up 2-1.
The third set seemed to take the life out of MHC. MCLA controlled the fourth set and cruised to a 25-12 win to close out the match.
Garber had a nice first match in a Trailblazer uniform with 12 kills and 8 digs. Scattergood added 11 digs and 3 aces for MCLA. Stewart notched 40 assists and 8 aces to lead the team in both categories. Ellie Walter-Goodspeed was solid on defense with a team best 15 digs.
MCLA is off until Tuesday night when they head to Bay Path for an 8pm non league contest.
